Chris Matthews joked about putting a ‘Bill Cosby pill’ in Hillary’s water

Chris Matthews is not having a good day. Earlier today I wrote about his sustained laughter when Gov. Terry McAuliffe suggested he might punch President Trump for getting in his space. Now The Cut is reporting that Matthews joked about putting a “Bill Cosby pill” in Hillary’s water prior to an interview in early 2016:

On January 5, 2016, MSNBC Hardball host Chris Matthews interviewed Hillary Clinton in an Iowa fire station during the Democratic primary season. Network footage obtained by the Cut shows Matthews, during the interview setup, making a couple of “jokes” about Clinton. He asks, “Can I have some of the queen’s waters? Precious waters?” And then, as he waits for the water, he adds, “Where’s that Bill Cosby pill I brought with me?” Matthews then laughs, delighted with the line, for an extended moment, as the staffers around him react with disbelief, clearly uncomfortable.

“This was a terrible comment I made in poor taste during the height of the Bill Cosby headlines,” Matthews said to the Cut. “I realize that’s no excuse. I deeply regret it and I’m sorry.”

The Cut notes that Matthews has a history of bad-mouthing Hillary Clinton saying he seems to “channel what a hypothetical sexist Republican might say.” In the clip, you can clearly see one woman on the set who seems shocked by Matthews’ remark, while others laugh uncomfortably. Last month the Daily Caller reported that Matthews paid $40,000 to an assistant producer who accused him of sexual harassment.

Two sources familiar with the situation told The Daily Caller that Matthews paid $40,000 to settle with an assistant producer on his show, “Hardball with Chris Matthews,” in 1999 after she accused him of harassment. An MSNBC spokesperson contested that claim to the Caller, saying the company instead paid significantly less as part of a severance package.

The woman complained to CNBC executives about Matthews making inappropriate comments and jokes about her while in the company of others.

That’s the only description I’ve seen of this incident which happened at CNBC back in 1999. But it sounds as if Matthews was making some kind of crude joke to this producer in front of a bunch of other people, i.e. exactly the thing he does in this clip below. If Matthews is still doing the same thing in early 2016 that got him in trouble in 1999, it’s probably safe to assume he’s not going to change at this point. If MSNBC wants to keep employing him it’s with the knowledge that he’s probably going to keep making people around him uncomfortable with his misogynist jokes. I wonder if this won’t be the last straw for him.
